For those Jalops that are into this kind of thing (these are AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION wagons, not brown manuals), there are a couple of excellent 3-series wagons on Carmax right now. With the extended warranty, as well documented by Dodge Durango (doug demuro?), these are excellent purchases. And as the last years (‘11 and ‘12) of the E91, they are, presumably, the most pristine of the model that you’re going to find.
This one: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is fully decked out with nav, sport package (sweet flappy paddles!), upgraded H/K sound (totally worth it if you can find it on a used car) and the coveted roof-rail delete which, I think, really preserves the lines of the wagon. (There are still mounting posts beneath little covers where the rails would be for screwing in an aftermarket rack super cleanly if needed. What’s nice about that is how simple it is to take the aftermarket rack off for the 90% of the time you don’t need it.)
And this one:

has the rails, and is a Sport model, but it does not have the nav (which some people prefer it that way). Also, it’s a ‘2 - the last year of the E91 wagons. While the Sport seems like a confusing thing to throw on a wagon, much less a 328, it’s still fun to have.
I’ve kept my Carmax alert up since finding my E91 last year, and this is the first time in a long time I’ve seen a ‘12 + sport package come along, and even less common to see one without the roof rails.
Someone needs to give these wagons a good Jalopnik home.

Honestly the N52 powered E9x’s don’t really need an extended warranty, but it would be sweet to find a manual M-sport RWD E91 at Carmax!

Both are really nice! I’m almost positive that a 3er xi wagon will be my next one. We need/want a 3rd car and had always talked about an SUV but I hate every one that I drive!

Except the AWD I’d love that second one, especially since private party sellers seem to be asking ridiculous amounts for their copies.

I have an 09 sedan with the sport package, and to be honest I think the suspension is too hard for most areas (northeast, for example). However, I’ve heard that the AWD models do not have the suspension lowered the way the RWD models do, so perhaps the spring rates are softer. Do love those wheels. Would love to know how an AWD vs. RWD Sport Package models compare on ride stiffness.

Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ve seen an E91 without AWD. Must be pretty uncommon.

It is unfortunately.

If you had the time, I’d talk you out of the SUV and into an E91 for sure.
Highlights: it’s a sports car - for real. (You won’t be roasting Porsches from stoplights, but it’s quick enough, handles well, and feels very planted.) It gets good enough gas mileage.
It cruises like a dream.
It looks damn good and is NOT a dime a dozen like the BMW SUVs. Not a joke - where I live in the south, I’ve seen more BMW i3s around town than I have E91s or F31s (6 i3s vs. 4 wagons...or 5 depending on whether there are 2 silver ones, or just one)
The SUV is definitely more suited to go off road than the wagon (not saying much, there), and the SUV seating position is higher if you like that. Almost inch for inch, the 328 wagon has the same cargo and passenger space as the X3. Leg room is slightly tighter in the 328, but there’s certainly enough room for 4 people to ride comfortably.
Wagon and SUV: 4 adults and their bags, there’s plenty of room for everything and then some. Add 2 dogs (as we typically travel) and there’s room for all occupants, but not for their bags or any extras. With the Wagon, however, toss a box on top and you’re good to go. Because the wagon is low to the ground it’s actually really easy with one person, and with the roof longer than on a sedan, you can actually fit a pretty massive box up there. With the box on my wagon, I actually end up with more cargo space than I used to have in my Land Rover. With the SUV, getting a box up there is kind of tough, especially with one person. Getting your goods in and out of the box is a hassle. Parking may end up being a hassle. The wagon wins this one.
So the question is, how often do you need to go any kind of off road? If never, go for the wagon. The AWD systems in both are plenty well suited to handle snow and ice with the right rubber, so that’s a wash. Towing differences are 3500 for the X3 and somewhere between 2700 and 4000 (which seems too high) for the wagon, depending on who you ask - in other words neither will tow a decent sized ski boat, but both will tow a trailer (I have with mine and it’s fine) and jet skis, etc.
If you want versatility, go for the wagon. You get a sports car, a tourer, and loads of space all in one.

They had a Volvo C30 Polestar manual yesterday with 27K for 24K. Whoever was in inventory that made that pricing f’ed up - most are for sale for over 30K or around that mark.
Not to my surprise, it was gone as of this morning.
